Alpha Power jet model 356 has been chosen by the Canadian Department of National Defence to be used in retro-fitting all of its diving tender boats .It is the first Canadian hydro-jet designed specifically for diesel-powered vessels of between 200 hp and 600 hp.
The performance standard requiered by the Deparment of National Defence are quits demanding :
Greater thrust at lower speed
Faster and less expensive installation time ( using the plug & play design ).
All stainless steel , corrosion-resistant construction .
Minimum lossof speed under fully loaded condition .
The Alpha Power Jet is direct drive system and meet the expectations of National Defence officials who requiere impressive top speed characteristics when a vessel is running light, while still maintaining very good performance when the vessel is fully loaded. As a result of a lengthy R & D program , the Alpha Power Jet delivers such performance .
Sea trials with these unique working jets were succesfully performed in Vancouver on july 10 th and 11 th on a Diving Tender boat M.V. ABALONE of the Department of National Defence .
The M.V. ABALONE is powered by twin cat engines 3126 engines of 375 hp each in an aluminium planing hull 30 feet in lenght , Twin Alpha Power Jets model 356 driving ZF , 1.15 /1 ration transmission were fitted for the test . The total weight was about 22,800 pounds . With the use of Alpha Power Jets , an average speed of 32.4 knots was recorded , satisfying all of National Defence requierements. The Bollard pull tests conducted by Navy confirmed the Alpha Power Jet performed 15 % better that thrust performance curve requierements . Such performance is now possible through the use of a special impeller profile developed by Alpha Power Jet engeneers . It is more resistant to low-speed cavitation than other designs. It allows the Alpha Power Jet to increase thrust at lower speed compared to a conventional waterjet. This high trust jet is direct drive which saves weigh and maintenance and costs . With 10 to 15 percent higher operating speeds under load, the benefits are obvious. This Alpha power Jet design feature is combined with greater vessel maneuverability as well as shallow draft capabilities.
The Alpha Power Jet is aviable in two models :
the 356 (14) diameter impeller
the 420 (16.5) diameter impeller.
